In this week’s issue of The Redress Review, I reflect on the recent spate of gender-based violence cases in Pakistan—including honour killings and marital rape—and raise pressing questions about the roles and failures of the government, the legal system, law enforcement, society, and the family unit. At the heart of it all lie the entrenched forces that continue to shape our collective conscience: patriarchy, misogyny, and the manipulation of Islamic principles to justify brutality.
